The outdoor art scene tends to wake up as the snow melts and spring shows its lovely faces. One aspect of the city that is often overlooked is the outdoor art scene. Colorado Springs is home to a diverse array of public art installations, from murals to sculptures, that are dispersed throughout the city. In this article, we’ll explore some of the most notable outdoor art installations in Colorado Springs.
One of the events that captured some of the most alluring art were showcased in Art on the Streets, an award-winning program of Downtown Ventures. This event turned downtown Colorado Springs into a year-long art show, and the current displays will be up through May 2023. The 24th annual Art on the Streets exhibits were drawn from about 100 artists. Six murals and six sculptures were selected.
Beyond the artists chosen for the downtown project, one of the most iconic art installations in Colorado Springs is the “Untitled” sculpture by Colorado-based artist, Christopher Weed. The sculpture is located in front of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and is made of steel and bronze. The piece features a twisting, spiraling design that is reminiscent of a tornado, and it stands over 20 feet tall. “Untitled” is a must-see for anyone visiting Colorado Springs. I wonder if everyone feels untitled from time to time. Who am I really?
A curious outdoor art installation in Colorado Springs is the “Concrete Couch” sculpture, located in the heart of downtown. The sculpture was created by a local artist collective called Concrete Couch and is made entirely of recycled materials, including concrete and scrap metal. The sculpture is meant to represent the idea of community collaboration and features a series of concrete blocks that are arranged in a playful, whimsical design.
